One other thing to note, when it comes to re obtaining a 1st rounder, even if it ends up being #30. It could be turned around in compensation for siging someone elses RFA this summer. IF its for less than 3.9 mil/yr then the compensation is a 1st and a 3rd.
Without a 1st round pick the leafs can't even amke an offer for these guys.
Notable RFA's this summer, along with their current salaries. Atlanta Thrashers Bryan Little C 21 $850,000 Boston Milan Lucic L 21 $685,000 Although I am sure Boston would match any offer. Montreal Canadiens Carey Price G 21 $850,000 Washington Capitals Nicklas Backstrom C 21 $850,000

The real discussion here should not what the bruins will take with the leafs pick (IMO if its not Hall then the leafs still win this deal),
I agree that if the above happens, the Leafs still win the deal right now. But the problem is they still get another 1st and 2nd rounder. That's why 2, 1st round picks around the 10-15 mark would've made this deal a lot more even. If Boston picks in the top 5 this year, Toronto definitely needs to finish a lot higher next year to make this deal even out.

Why would you want to lock up any part of this team when it's so pathetic when this group is together. Blow it up except for may 4 or 5 players.
Good start today! Bubye Blake, Toskala, Stajan, Hagman, White and Mayers. Is that enough for ya?

I am surprised Burke hasn't made any moves yet. Today's big deal with Calgary apparently started a week ago. So he was working on it while you were getting worried!

If you look at the plaeyrs the leafs have available, there aren;t any difference makers. So teams will add these gusy for depth only. Leaf players wont go to teams trying to make the jump from contender to cup holder.
Apparently Hagman garners the most interest. 20 (and counting) goal scorer with a 3 mil contract. BUt he is under contract next year too, and so why would the leafs get rid of him?
I thihnk Burke is waiting on bubble teams to start trying to fill holes, or replace injuries in order to ensure a playoff spot. These are the teams that will be active closer to the deadline.
E.g. lets say sometime around the end of Feb Kiproisiff, Turko, or one of Howard/osgood gets hurt and the stars/wings/flames are still in a dogfight for that 8th spot. Now all of a sudden ther would be interest in a guy like Toskala even if only decause of his past game in SJ.
It took Burke 3 days to answer your post. Anaheim needed a cheaper backup(Toskala) and a fast winger(Blake), while the Leafs picked a very usable 1st string goalie and mentor for Jonas(J.S. Giguere) Stajan, Hagman, Mayers and Whitey all head west to help bolster the Flames lineup. Addition by subtraction and we'll see how this shakes out in the few games before the Olympic break. Bozak seems a lock to stay as Kessel's centre now, and Stalberg and Hanson should likely get the call-up for the balance of the season. If this all works out as Burke is hoping ... there will not be a Top 5 pick for the Boston Bruins or a Top 10 if Burke gets his wish of a playoff push. So I'll pick Nino Niederreiter as being the Bruin pick. (Assuming they have him rated higher )

This also frees up some roster spots in case Burke goes college fishing again this year.

They were saying on the Fan 590 today that the Leafs have roughly $10 million to sign 10 players next season. I think it is imperative that we see Finger moved before the deadline or else I fear Kaberle could be gone. And right now, I like him still on this team as the primary puck moving defenseman.

Yeah I'm with you I'd love the Finger go somewhere else and to see Kabbie stay but by the way they are talking he will be gone. Saying probaly for a 1st rounder and a young prospect. Unless Burkie packages him with say Finger and a couple of others and pulls off another blockbuster deal.

Just have to remember that Burke is not going to ask Kabby to waive his NTC ... if/when the Leafs miss the playoffs again a Kabby deal will be in works for draft day.
That is unless Kaberle's agent approaches the Leafs with a 10 team list of potential destinations.

Yeah he is adament that he won't ask him to wave the ntc and I agree. A deal is a deal ! Kabbie may ask for one though but time will tell what happens.

What i meant was that this year, they have roster spots now available, So if theres another Chris Hanson type, Burke can offer him immediate NHL experience if he signs with the leafs. As I understand it, this was a big factor in why Bozak and Hanson signed here last year.

Just thought I'd point out that Boston has now lost their 10th in a row. Tim Thomas is rumoured to be on the block. A strong finish by the Leafs and no finish by the Bruins ... it may be their own pick that gets them the better draft position.
